While we are at traditions... here is another one that is different in Germany from other countries. The days before New Year\'s Eve when you see persons for the last time of the old year (family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, even shop assistants) you wish them \'Guten Rutsch\'. That means literally translated \'good slide\' but comes from an older German saying when they wished \'good travelling\' (into the new year). And only when the new year starts we wish each other \'Happy New Year\'.

So, Guten Rutsch to you all.

Phillis, congratulations to your anniversary. .ch You are right. We usually have snow and ice and cold temperatures in winter. Though, when I was a child the piles of snow were bigger and we could ski much more than today. Often, until end of March. Nowedays we get the snow but it thaws fast and we seldom have a longer period of much snow. All the shops are closed on Stephen\'s Day here as it is a national holiday. We usually visit friends or friends come over to us. And there are often enough rests to eat from the day before. So, I don\'t cook that day. The traditional meal on Christmas Day is roasted duck with dumplings and red cabbage. And we have an other tradition for the gifts. They are already presented on 24th in the evening. In families with small children the Santa comes to the house (i.e. the dressed up father or uncle or neighbour) with his sack, out of which he takes the presents. In other families the presents are laid out under the Christmas tree.

Ms Cat is part of this GB and I would miss her. But I hope she has a strong cat heart and will come through.

Treasa, welcome home. Don\'t overdo now and rest enough to come up your feet again.

Pat, thanks for your nice speech. I feel honored and I like to be part of this GB. And a special \'thank you\' to Webbie. What would we do without him. ♥

LIIIIIIIIIZZZ, I NEVER caused trouble here at all. I\'m a sweet and innocent and managable person. Webbie can affirm it. Right, Webbie? hehehehe

Maria, how nice to see you here. I hope all is well there with you. I saw on TV that Madrid had a lot of snow recently. Greetings to all of your family.

Welcome home Treasa, you take it easy. Let The Boss take care of you for a change.

Pat-sorry to hear about Ms Cat, but 16 in cat years would make her about as old as I feel today.

Pat, so sorry about Ms. Cat. It\'s so difficult when our pets are ill.

Mike, I\'d be happy to cook for you, especially now as I doubt you are getting snow in CA, unless you\'re northern CA.

I\'ve been so frustrated. There is something wrong with my laptop and I haven\'t been able to \'add entry\' from it, but the big computer seems okay. I\'m so frustrated--wait, i said that already.

Today is our wedding anniversary. We met in 1977, so what\'s another year, right?

Jack1 better make up his mind soon--Jenny or Lizzie, that is the question. Guess I better mind my own business.

Is that paella recipe still available? If so, I\'d love to have it!

Mornin\'...

Thank you Webbie, for the good news about Treasa. I hope she\'s resting a little bit more, now. I miss her.

There is bad news here about Ms Cat, I am taking her to the vet today, she hasn\'t been well for some days, has stopped eating and drinking unless I hold a little dry food in my hand, then she will nibble at it, or bring the water bowl to her and hold it for her, then she will drink a little. She\'s getting thinner by the minute. She is 16 now, and I suspect that there is kidney failure, I\'ve seen that before, and she is very subdued. She has always been such a holy terror, I know she is a very sick cat to be behaving this way. So she may be coming to the end, as kidney things usually can\'t be reversed and just get worse. We\'ll see what the vet\'s tests say, but I won\'t let her suffer needlessly. She goes in at 1:00. It\'s OK to say a little prayer for a kitty, if you will.

I\'ll talk to you later in the day.

Pat

Patricia, you did make me long for that interesting, polite, welcoming Coven, always in a good mood,I found when I discovered this GB.I miss Sarah, myself, too, indeed. And all the other friends who aren\'t now posting. We shared recipes, as well... 20 posts for my paella. What a shame! And we got nice little ducklings from Mr Seoirse, who along with Webby were planning to start an ambitious business of recicled chewing gums and lollipops in China, that was expected to be a glorious market due to its huge population. I enjoyed your company, and I\'m addicted to this GB. Hugs to everyone

Pinto Beans & Cornbread, sounds so good. We have a ham we are still working on, once it gets down to the bone it will become Red Beans & Rice & served with Cornbread. My favorite after Christmas meal

Pat\'s right I just started posting in self defense & I\'m still out numbered most days.

Thanks for including me Pat. I still can\'t get over how long so many of you have been posting on the GB. I have had experience with two other forums (not like this) where there were always disputes and arguments. Sometimes, it got very nasty. So far, this GB has a unique community in that everyone seems to show respect to each other. Very nice, indeed.

Ho hum. Wish some of you would come home or wake up...I\'m in the house again watching it sn*w. Yep, it\'s baaaaack. Hubby home from work early, but is napping.

Any more word on Treasa, Webbie? Just wondering about her.

Have a nice pot of pinto beans on the stove, making the house smell tasty. Will whip up some cornbread and have fried potatoes (not french fried) for supper. Can\'t get much more southern than that unless you added collard greens, which I detest.

You can tell I\'m bored, i\'m talking of food again...

Check ya\'ll later. Hope you are all having a wonderful Tuesday.

I was speaking of the real old times.

I think you will be around for a long time, friend, I\'m glad about that, and I\'m glad to know you.

Mornin\'...

Ah, I see we\'ve had another night of bickering from the Oz contingent...at the moment is is a VERY long distance international fight, but it\'s normal.

Temp here is about 30F this morning, but I only know that because I read it on the computer weather report. Ms Cat and I considered going out to look at the thermometer on the deck, but she said \"Hell, no, it\'s too cold out there\", so we didn\'t.

The end of another year looms, makes me think about the past, I\'ll tell you something you may not realize...the person who is still around and has been posting on this GB the longest is Gary D. Some time ago, I looked back in the old GBs, and found that to be so, then Liz and I came on about 2 weeks apart in 2004. I think Steph was next, then Annette, followed closely by Mies. Mr. Mies only came on in self-defence, we roasted him so unmercifully he had to speak up for himself. Many friends have come on and stayed after that, some that are still regulars and some that just post occassionally. Treasa, Micilin, Mar, Eamon, Mike CA, Jim, Marie, Ellen, Jack, Dermot, Maria Asuncion, Sean Fada, Mike S, Seoirse...all (and some others I am forgetting to mention, but I\'m not forgetting our Webbie who makes it all possible) were, and are still, members of this far-flung family.

I don\'t post with any other website, so I don\'t know if we are an unusual group or not, but what I do know is that we enjoy each other\'s company and share our lives as friends and long-distance neighbors somehow, and it has brought me many a laugh and some tears, I\'m thinking of our Sarah, RIP.

We\'ve shared weddings and births and sicknesses and deaths and meeting each other in person, travels and pictures and partings and laughter and arguments and information and opinions.
